Kelly Fortier is a vegetarian.
The 20-year-old made the switch in January for humanitarian and health reasons.
"I figured I would be safer because I wouldn't get anything from the meat, like mad cow," she said.
When she ordered a veggie burger from the local Harvey's restaurant on Algonquin Avenue, Oct. 7, she had no idea she would be infected with E. coli.
John Baker, 51, doesn't eat fast food often. But indulging a craving for a hamburger Oct. 6 landed him in the hospital for three days.
"The symptoms were terrible," he said. "The worst abdominal cramps I ever had. It felt like I had eaten broken glass."
